I am working on a multi-day trek project, and I would like to add that the current naming of the segments are inaccurate (at times, I guess) and helps no one. I hiked from Lukla to Phakding, Nepal, but all I see is “CHA - CHA” everywhere. I understand that naming happens automatically, but I don’t understand the issue in giving users the ability to rename their segments however they like.

Thanks for sharing your screenshot and, yes, I see the frustration with this kind of UX/UI. A new timeline is getting developed right now that is scrollable which makes it better readable.
Renaming segments is counter intuitive here since each segment tells the user start and endpoint.

Can you elaborate on this, please? What exactly needs naming in your opinion?
